How Can An OT Help

Occupational therapists (OTs) play a vital role in helping individuals live well by understanding their needs and aspirations in their daily activities. Through a comprehensive assessment, OTs examine what values and activities are important to the client, what is working well and what challenges they may face. They analyze routines, physical and mental abilities, materials used for activities, available support networks, and environmental barriers at home, work, school, or in the community.

Based on the client’s goals, occupational therapists employ strategies to facilitate participation, accessibility, and improve overall well-being, such as:

Working With Families:

  • Working with clients to select and engage in activities that align with their values and desired identity.
  • Focusing on strengths and exploring ways to overcome barriers hindering participation.
  • Developing skills through coaching, including coping, wheelchair use, and self-advocacy.
  • Creating inclusive spaces and resources within communities to promote belonging and collective participation.
  • Encouraging clients to experiment with different approaches to activities and providing guidance and support.

Recommending and Support Equipment:

  • Researching and testing various tools and equipment to improve participation in daily life.
  • Recommending aids for household tasks, recreational activities, work or school-related activities, self-care, and transportation.
  • Aiding in the selection of adaptive devices like key holders, card holders, ergonomic setups, shower chairs, or modified car features.

Advocating Safety and Accessibility For All People:

  • Assessing physical environments like workplaces, homes, schools, or community spaces to identify areas for improvement.
  • Connecting older adults with relevant services, resources, peer support groups, local businesses, and care centers.
  • Collaborating with employers and educators to develop supportive strategies, gradual return-to-work/school plans, and necessary accessible accommodations.
  • Engaging with government bodies and insurance providers to advocate for funding and support for recommended equipment and tools.

Occupational therapists prioritize client-centered care, aiming to prevent various challenges such as hospital stays, premature nursing home placements, home & workplace injuries, and unemployment among individuals with developmental disabilities or mental illnesses.

By working closely with people and their families, occupational therapists empower them to overcome barriers, maximize independence, and foster well-being. Through their expertise and dedication, OTs significantly contribute to helping individuals lead fulfilling lives within their communities.
